The Big Annual SBL Jamboree
I’ll be out of action blogsite-wise for a few days from today (through 22 Nov), as I’m heading off to the annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature, the big professional society of scholars of all stripes involved in academic study of the Bible and all things cognate with that. This year, we meet in Chicago. (Brrrr.)
The SBL meets again in tandem with the American Academy of Religion, the other large professional body of scholars, the AAR covering scholars in other areas of the study of Religion (and religions and texts not related to the Bible). Together, the two societies will likely draw seven to eight thousand registrations for this annual meeting.
I’m taking part in a panel discussion of a new publication: The Jewish Annotated New Testament, edited by Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Zvi Brettler (New York/Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2012). I look forward to what others of the panel will say. I’ll see about reporting on the event later.
