In memorandum

December 18, 2019

As many of you now know, my father Larry Hurtado has passed away on the 25th of November 2019. I will keep his blog online as it is a testament to his work and engagment with the wider community interested in bibical scholarship. In the spirit of this, I have news to share from Edinburgh University below:

Professor Larry Hurtado PhD Scholarship Fund

We hope that friends of Larry will forgive this intrusion into his blog, but we have an announcement that some of you may be interested in. Larry devoted his life to building up the study of New Testament and Christian Origins at Edinburgh, and many PhD students from all over the world have benefited from his friendship and guidance. In an effort to remember Larry’s legacy, and even to build on it in a small way, we are delighted to announce the establishment of a new scholarship fund in honour of Larry. It will be known as the Professor Larry Hurtado Scholarship and will support a PhD candidate at the School of Divinity working in the area of Christian Origins. We would very much value your support in this venture.

  1. Dr Hurtado was an outstanding scholar who not only shared his knowledge, but also responded personally to those who contacted him with questions. He was also a supreme example of showing respect to other academics, even if he disagreed with their points of view.
I am thankful for all that he taught me, and will continue to benefit from his books and the existing postings in his blog.
My deepest condolences to all family members and friends.

  2. Much saddened to hear of Larry’s death. Used to love hearing Larry when he took the service at the then Morningside Baptist Church, Edinburgh where his depth of intellect, knowledge and clarity of thought shone through. I could have listened to him for hours.

What a great loss to the world of Biblical scholarship! So many of us that admired Dr. Hurtado will forever miss his insightful writings. My deepest sympathies to the family of Dr. Hurtado. To me there is great comfort in the words of the Apostle Paul Who said, “…to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”. God bless the Hurtado family.

Larry and his insights will be sorely missed, but he left plenty for us to digest for years to come. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

  8. Very sad to hear of the loss of Larry Hurtado.

I’m short on words at the moment but my heart is with those closest to him, especially his family.

I considered it an honor to be able to dialogue with him the few times that I did on this blog. He was always so accessible, which is often a rarity among people of his stature.

His positive contribution to NT scholarship, and to the Kingdom of God will be felt for generations and for eternity.

I was very saddened to hear this news. It is great Larry was given some extra time after his diagnosis and treatment but I somehow thought/hoped that extra time would go on for much longer! It is very good news that you intend to keep Larry’s blog online. It has a wealth of information that needs to remain available. Thank you so much.

  11. I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Hurtado. Although I did not know him personally, I benefited from his vast knowledge of the New Testament and Christian Origins through his books and, in no small way, through the blog which he faithfully maintained, even when suffering with ill health. His legacy to both Church and Academy is extraordinary and will, with God’s abundant blessing, enrich both for decades to come.

May God remember Larry in His Kingdom.

    Memory eternal.

This is very sad news to hear. I studied with Larry many years ago at Regent College, and also met and knew his wife Shannon. My deep sympathy to you Shannon, and your children, in the loss of Larry. I know he will be warmly remembered by many. His death has touched my heart today, as I remember him fondly, as a professor and a friend. May God be with you, all as you continue on without him. In sympathy,
    Esther Ruth (Warkentin)Beenken, Ph.D.

  13. God rest his blessed soul in peace. He cogently proved that great scholarship and Christian faith can get on well together. He was my teacher, my mentor, my friend. Dumnezeu să-l ierte și să-i așeze sufletul la loc cu lumină, la loc de odihnă, la loc cu verdeață, acolo de unde a fugit toată durerea, întristarea și suspinul.

  14. Oh no!!!! I did not know. He was among my most admired scholars, and extremely courageous during his Illness. He leaves a huge whole and a pit of grief. My deepest sympathies.
